Summer is officially here, and for many, that means heading to the pool, lake, or ocean to cool off and have some fun! While splashing around is a quintessential part of the season, it's also a time when our ears can be vulnerable to common water-related issues, particularly "swimmer's ear."

At Suono Hearing, we want you to enjoy every moment of your summer activities without discomfort or hearing setbacks. Let's talk about how to keep your ears healthy and happy around water.

What is Swimmer's Ear? (Otitis Externa)

Swimmer's ear, medically known as otitis externa, is an infection of the outer ear canal. It often occurs when water gets trapped in the ear canal, creating a moist environment where bacteria or fungi can thrive.

Symptoms of swimmer's ear can include:

  • Itching in the ear canal

  • Redness and swelling of the outer ear

  • Pain that worsens when you pull on the outer ear or chew

  • Pus-like drainage from the ear

  • Temporary muffled hearing if the canal swells shut

While often mild, if left untreated, swimmer's ear can become quite painful and lead to more serious infections.

Your Guide to Prevention: Keeping Water Out and Health In

The good news is that swimmer's ear is largely preventable! Here are our top tips for keeping your ears safe this summer:

  1. Dry Your Ears Thoroughly: After swimming or showering, gently dry your ears. Tilt your head to each side to help water drain out, and use a soft towel to dry the outer ear. You can also use a hairdryer on its coolest, lowest setting, held several inches from your ear, to help evaporate any remaining moisture.

  2. Avoid Cotton Swabs: Resist the urge to use cotton swabs or other objects to clean inside your ears. These can push earwax deeper into the canal, trap water, or even scratch the delicate skin, making it more susceptible to infection. Your ears are self-cleaning!

  3. Consider Over-the-Counter Ear Drops: After swimming, you can use alcohol-based ear drops (like swimmer's ear drops) to help dry out the ear canal. Always follow the product instructions carefully. Note: Do NOT use these if you have ear tubes, a perforated eardrum, or suspect an ear infection.

  4. The Power of Earplugs: This is one of the most effective ways to prevent swimmer's ear, especially if you spend a lot of time in the water or are prone to infections.

The Benefits of Earplugs for Swimming

Wearing earplugs while swimming creates a barrier that prevents water from entering the ear canal. They are highly recommended for:

  • Children: Especially those prone to ear infections.

  • Individuals with Ear Tubes: Essential for preventing water from entering the middle ear.

  • People with Perforated Eardrums: Critical for protecting the delicate inner ear structures.

  • Anyone Prone to Swimmer's Ear: If you've had it before, you know how uncomfortable it can be!

  • Surfers, Kayakers, and Divers: Protecting against cold water exposure and pressure changes.

While generic earplugs are available at most pharmacies, for the best protection and comfort, we often recommend custom-molded swimming earplugs. These are made specifically for the unique shape of your ear canal, providing a superior seal and a more comfortable fit than off-the-shelf options. They are also durable and reusable.

Don't Let Ear Issues Spoil Your Summer Fun!

If you experience persistent ear pain, discharge, or difficulty hearing after water exposure, it's important to see a healthcare professional promptly. Early treatment can prevent complications and get you back to enjoying your summer faster.
